Comores

Comores: Sept 1997

Just north of Madagascar is a group of 4 islands that make up the Comores - Grande Comore is home to the La Galawa hotel but we recommend the Malouja next door for the real experience.

The Galawa did have a PADI Gold Palm dive centre run by South Africans and (because of Kenya) we signed up for our Advanced course.

Excellent diving here, clear warm water and lively reefs. We didn't see any coelacanths but enjoyed (in an eerie sort of way) diving on a ditched airliner. The prime site 'Banc Vailleu', a pillar of rock 600mtrs tall tops out at 25mtrs and although a great site we struggled. It was all we could do using the rented gear to fight the current to get from the boat to the reef - by the time we got down we'd scoffed half a tank of air. Still what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!
