Chale Island: Sept 1996

One week land safari, one week diving based on a tidal island called Chale (pronounced Charlie). Spent the first day relaxing and soaking up the environment and on day 2 set off on safari - Tsavo national park is 6hrs by minibus so it's a good job we made friends with the other couple, a retired metropolitan policeman and his wife who both had a great sense of humour.

Apart from the wildlife we saw on the road, we knew we were in Kenya when we stepped out on the balcony of our room in Taita Hills and saw a giraffe. This may sound daft but I felt this was going to be worth the 6hr drive. As this is a diving website I won't tell you about the amazing things we saw or the bizarre tented accommodation at Finch-Hattons. Actually the diving was disappointing - remember, we're newly qualified open-water divers who learned in near perfect conditions - here was average visibility, strong currents and swells.
