A quick email to Chris at Symbiosis and we hatch a plan to explore some of the more remote parts of Indonesia. Here is a brief synopsis.
We arrive at Froggies travel-weary but excited, where Christiane welcomes us with a cold drink and some yummy homemade cookies - I like it already. Our gear goes to the dive centre and we got to our room which is a stilted wood/bamboo house with link-detached tiled bathroom. We shower; ok not really a shower more a case of tipping water from a bucket over ourselves but you get the idea. Think about a snooze but opt for pre-dinner drink instead (obviously). Dinner is an informal buffet and is attended by all including the staff, the food is simple but delicious.
Up bright and early for a light breakfast then wade out to the boat. Diving is excellent with fantastic reefs hosting a huge variety of critters.
My camera is working overtime, If only I could remember to switch it to macro mode. On one hand the nudibranchs are slow moving, on the other there's a slight swell so as long as I can time it right I should have some half decent photos.
Amanda shot this red and white beauty which is only 20mm long (hover over it for its latin name).
Our guide Dante points out most things to begin with but after the first couple of dives we start seeing things for ourselves. I'm a bit out of shape and chuff air, super-fit bird Amanda hardly uses any so we agree that I can surface alone while the 2 of them carry on for 10mins. (not something to recommend but the water is so clear I can see them and they can see me all the way to the surface.).
After the first dive we return for lunch - have to be careful not to overindulge - before setting off for the afternoon dive. More great stuff to see including Turtle and at the other end of the size scale, what Dante assures me is a Pink squat-lobster.
This is tiny - about 30mm across and how my Fuji focussed on it is a miracle.
It's only our first day here and already it's clear we're staying with our favourite auntie.
